Change of address
A change of address must be registered within 7 days. Advance notifications of change of address are not accepted.
Those who are not married or in registered cohabitation must themselves submit notification of their change of address. You cannot register the change of address of your children who are of legal age or that of your parents.
Married couples must have the same legal domicile. If a divorce is impending the accompanying comments must state that a divorce is impending. Married couples who are reuniting, e.g. after legal separation, should make a note of that fact in the comments field. The spouse with whom the person is being reunited must confirm the change. If a final divorce decree was granted abroad, documents to that effect must be submitted.
You cannot deregister from cohabitation on the basis of a change of address if you and your partner have children together. In cases where children are involved, a notification of an end of cohabitation is not to be sent until a confirmation of the custody of the children is available from the district commissioner.
If a child’s address is to be moved from abroad to Iceland, information on the child’s custody must be provided.
- In instances where there is joint custody and a child is to be transferred, e.g. from one custodial parent to another, an agreement on a change of legal domicile for the child must have been received by Registers Iceland from a district commissioner.
- If custodial parents are married or in registered cohabitation with each other and a child is to be transferred to a third party, the person to whom the child is to be linked in the National Registry must be identified. The notification of a change of address must be accompanied by the written consent of the person linked to the child. It is sufficient for only one custodial parent to sign the notification in such instances. See document requirements – for children
- In instances where the parents are married or cohabiting and a child moves with one parent from one country to another, the consent of the non-moving parent is required.
- If there is one custodian, the consent of the non-custodial parent is not necessary. However, the custodian must inform the non-custodial parent of a change of legal domicile with at least six weeks’ notice.
Transfer of a legal domicile to Iceland can only be registered by coming in person to either a Registers Iceland office, located in Reykjavík and Akureyri or to the District Police Commissioners office in the municipality in which you reside, and presenting a valid legal ID (Passport, Icelandic driver‘s license or Travel ID).
Please note that a change of address must be registered within 7 days of arrival in Iceland.
If a cohabitation came to an end with a move abroad, the cohabitation is not registered again unless Registers Iceland receives a notice thereof on a special form.
Transfers of legal domicile from Iceland must be registered within 7 days.
Transfer of legal domicile between the Nordic countries must always be registered in person in the requisite registration office in the country to which you are moving.
The same rules apply to the transfer of legal domicile to countries other than the Nordic countries as apply to changes to legal domicile within Iceland. Notify a change of address here.
Note that if one partner in a registered cohabitation moves abroad, the cohabitation is deregistered in the National Registry, with the attendant legal consequences. If, for example, the parties have children together, the cohabitation may not be deregistered until custody has been settled.
If the party that did not move from Iceland later moves abroad to the former cohabiting partner, the persons in questions are not registered as cohabiting unless they submit a request to that effect using the appropriate form.
Foreign nationals have to register a change of address using a separate form despite having previously been allocated an ID No., see: New registration of foreign nationals.
Students living in another municipality/country due to their schooling can keep their legal domicile in their home municipality. Information must be provided in the field Comments in the notification of a change of address. A certificate from the school must be attached.
Registered property owners, municipalities, healthcare facilities and others can, pursuant to law, send in a request for the legal domicile of a person to be moved. When a request for the change of address for a third party is received by Registers Iceland, the information is assessed and the case duly processed.
Notifications for the change of address of a company/association are on the website of the Directorate of Internal Revenue.
Remember to notify postal authorities of the change in address. Note that Iceland Post does not receive automatic change-of-address notifications from Registers Iceland.
