End of cohabitation
If individuals have children together, they are required to determine child custody arrangements before cohabitation is terminated.
If individuals registered in cohabitation in the national registry move to separate legal residences by submitting a change of address, the cohabitation automatically ends.
However, if individuals have children together, they are required to determine how custody of the child or children will be handled before cohabitation is terminated and the legal residence is changed. The parties must contact the District Commissioner (Sýslumaður) to make an agreement on the custody and legal residence of the child or children.
The District Commissioner sends the confirmed agreement to Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá), which registers the termination of cohabitation, updates the legal residence if applicable, and records the custody decision for the child or children.
