Foreign nationals are not eligible to vote in Icelandic presidential elections, parliamentary elections or national referendums and are therefore not part of the voter database. The only exception is Danish nationals residing in Iceland on 6 March 1946 or at any point in the 10 years before that date. These are eligible to vote according to Act No. 85/1946.
Other rules regarding voting rights for foreign nationals apply in municipal elections.
- Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish nationals who have had a legal domicile in Iceland for more than 3 consecutive years before election day have the right to vote in municipal elections.
- Other foreign nationals who have had a legal domicile in Iceland for more than 5 consecutive years before election day also have the right to vote in municipal elections.
