Voting Rights of Foreign Citizens
Foreign citizens may be entitled to vote in municipal elections in Iceland, subject to the conditions described below.
- Nordic citizens who have legal domicile in Iceland are entitled to vote in municipal elections.
- Other foreign citizens are entitled to vote in municipal elections after having had legal domicile in Iceland continuously for three years on election day.
Foreign citizens are generally not entitled to vote in presidential elections, parliamentary elections, or national referendums and are therefore not included on the electoral register for those elections.
- The only exception are Danish nationals who resided in Iceland on the 6th of March 1946 or in the 10 years prior to that date. This exception is according to Act No. 85/1946.
