Marital status not registered in the National Registry
Marital status is undeclared in the national registry.
If a person‘s marital status is undeclared in the National Registry, it is necessary to submit documents about marital status from the person‘s home country. An undeclared marital status can affect a person‘s rights, e.g. creditworthiness and entitlement to benefits.
Required documents by marital status
- Never married: documents confirming a person is unmarried must be submitted. The documents may not be older than 6 months.
- Married: a marriage certificate must be submitted.
- Divorced: divorce documents or a certificate confirming the divorce date must be submitted.
- Spouse deceased: documents confirming marital status as widowed, or a marriage certificate and spouse‘s death certificate, must be submitted.
Document requirements
- Original documents must be submitted along with a certified translation.
- International certificates are accepted.
- If documents are issued in a country outside the EEA, an Apostille certification or legalisation is required.
- If documents are electronically signed by a relevant authority, they can be submitted via email.
- The relevant registration authority in a person‘s home country must be contacted to determine the means to obtain documents.
- If a person‘s home country does not issue documents confirming that the person has never been married, the person needs to contact Registers Iceland via email: skra@skra.is.
- A person‘s marital status can be seen on https://island.is/ under Login and My information.
