Frequently asked questions about municipal elections
In the lookup “Where do I vote?” you can check if you are on the electoral register and can vote. There you can also find information about your polling station and polling division.

- Foreign citizens who have had continuous residence in Iceland for at least 3 years prior to the end of the election day and have legal domicile in the municipality
Students in the Nordic countries may apply to be included on the electoral register for municipal elections
- Applications must be received by Registers Iceland / Þjóðskrá no later than 40 days before election day

Changes made after the electoral register was created (e.g. after 8 April) may not appear in the “Where do I vote?” lookup.

- If you have been granted Icelandic citizenship after the electoral register was created and have legal domicile in Iceland, you can send an inquiry to kosningar@skra.is to check whether a request has been sent to the election committee to have you added to the electoral register
Do you reside abroad?
- Icelandic citizens living abroad are not eligible to vote in municipal elections in Iceland

- Icelandic citizens who are residing abroad (i.e. do not have legal domicile in a municipality in Iceland)
- Individuals who are under 18 years of age on election day
- Foreign citizens who have not met the required period of residence in Iceland
- Individuals whose name does not appear on the electoral register at the time of the election
If you cannot vote at your assigned polling station on election day, you can vote in advance
- Advance voting is available for a period leading up to election day, and opening hours may vary by location.
- It’s recommended to check specific locations and opening times in advance

A voter must be registered with legal domicile in the municipality by 12:00 noon, 38 days before election day, according to the national register
