Icelanders living abroad – can I vote?
Icelandic citizens living abroad can check whether they have the right to vote in elections to Alþingi, Presidential elections and in national referendums.
An Icelandic citizen has the right to vote for 16 years from the time he moves his legal residence out of the country.
After 16 years, you must apply to retain your voting rights, and the right is valid for 4 years at a time. It is necessary to renew your application if you wish to retain your voting rights.

Who can apply to be on the electoral register?
- Icelandic citizens who have reached the age of 18 and have been legally resident abroad for more than 16 years (counted from 1 December of the year before the elections are held) must apply to Registers Iceland to be included on the electoral register.
- A satisfactory application must be received by Registers Iceland by 1 December of the year before the elections are to be held.

- Please note that applications approved after the 1st of December 2025 do not confer voting rights in the national referendum on 29 August 2026.
